RECIPE FOR BUTTERMILK BISCUITS
In order to kick off the
National Buttermilk Biscuits Day celebration with you I’ll be sharing this 30
minutes – or less – recipe to bake yours and enjoy at home.
Let’s start with what you
need … Ingredients
INGREDIENTS
Ø
2 cups (250 grams) All-purpose Flour
Ø
1 tablespoon Baking Powder
Ø
¼ teaspoon baking soda
Ø
1 teaspoon Salt
Ø
6 tablespoons (85 grams) Cold unsalted Butter, cubed
Ø
3/4 cup (180 ml) cold buttermilk, plus 2 tablespoons more
for brushing top of the biscuits
Ø
2 teaspoons sugar
Now, all you need to do is
follow the instructions
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat
oven to 450°F.
- Line a
baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
- In a
large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda,
sugar, and salt until well combined.
- Cut
butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender or food processor until
the mixture resembles coarse crumbs (i.e until you have small pea sized
pieces of butter) about 5 minutes.
- Make a
well in the center of butter and flour mixture. Pour the cold buttermilk
into the mixture and gently work it together until the dough starts to
come together.
- Turn
dough onto a floured work surface, pat together into a rectangle.
- Fold
the rectangle in thirds. Turn the dough, gather any crumbs, and flatten
back into a rectangle. Repeat this process two more times.
- Roll
dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick rectangle.
- Using a
floured 2.5-inch biscuit cutter, cut out the biscuits. Continue to gather
any scrap pieces of dough, patting it back down to 1/2-inch thickness, and
cutting it until you have 12 biscuits.
- Transfer
biscuits to the prepared baking sheet. Press an indent into the top of
each biscuit with your thumb.
- Brush
the top of each biscuit with a little bit of buttermilk.
- Bake in
the preheated oven until browned, about 15 minutes.
- Remove
from the oven and brush with melted butter if desired. Allow to cool for a
few minutes, serve, and enjoy!
